The United Association (UA) is committed to supporting military veterans and active-duty service members interested in transitioning to successful, high-demand careers in the piping, plumbing, HVACR, welding, and fire protection trades.

Through specialized programs designed for current and former military members, the UA provides industry-recognized training, job placement, and lifelong support. It honors your service by helping you build a secure and rewarding future in the skilled trades.

UA Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) Program

The UA Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) Program is the premier pre-apprenticeship initiative specifically created for active-duty military personnel preparing to transition to civilian life. Recognized as a Department of Defense SkillBridge program, UA VIP offers free, hands-on training in welding, HVACR and fire suppression at select military bases across the country.

Key Features of the UA VIP Program

Free Training: No cost to participants; training is provided on-base during active-duty service.

Industry-Recognized Skills: Courses are taught by experienced UA instructors and cover in-demand trades including welding, HVACR and fire suppression.

No GI Bill Benefits Required: Unlike some SkillBridge programs, UA VIP does not require using any GI Bill benefits, allowing them to be saved for other uses.

Guaranteed Job Placement: Upon successful completion and military discharge, graduates are guaranteed direct entry into a UA-registered apprenticeship program and job placement with a signatory contractor.

National Network: Opportunities available at multiple military bases, including Camp Pendleton, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Fort Carson, Fort Cavazos, Camp Lejeune, Fort Campbell, and Naval Station Norfolk. Service members do not have to be stationed at these bases to apply for the UA VIP Program, and those stationed at neighboring installations are highly encouraged to apply for the UA VIP Program nearest to them.

Smooth Transition: The program is designed to minimize stress, and ensure you’re job-ready from day one, with access to union wages, benefits, and mentorship.

UA VIP graduates have gone on to build rewarding careers as apprentices, journeymen, instructors, and even business owners, enjoying competitive pay, world-class healthcare, and retirement benefits.

The program’s success stories highlight the strong community, support, and opportunities available to veterans in the UA.
