The Lackawanna Energy Center, a 1,480-megawatt natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant, is the largest plant of its kind in Pennsylvania and will have the capacity to power more than one million homes in the region. The borough of Jessup, the plant’s host community, will benefit from over $50 million in revenue. The Lackawanna Energy Center is owned by Invenergy, with partners Kiewit and GE (General Electric).
The Lackawanna Energy Center required a large staff and a craft workforce that was assembled by Kiewit Power Constructors, with an overall project peak of 1,400 workers. With 1.7 million work-hours performed in one year, the safety recordable rate was almost nonexistent. Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 524, Scranton, PA, made up 25 percent of the Kiewit Pipefitter and Welder workforce, with the remaining 75 percent consisting of UA travelers. The Kiewit Local 524 workforce was also responsible for the construction of the administration and control building, which is LEED Gold certified. The plant was completed in approximately 28 months. The project was completed three months ahead of schedule and under the projected $1.2 billion price tag.
