VIP Graduations at Naval Station Norfolk & Fort Hood


Today, there are two Veterans in Piping (VIP) Program graduations! Five sailors will graduate from the HVACR program at Naval Station Norfolk, and 13 soldiers will graduate from the welding program at Fort Hood.

The second HVACR class at Naval Station Norfolk began on 6 June 2016. The ceremony will be held at the Breezy Point Club located on Naval Station Norfolk. Mike Hazard will Emcee the ceremony. The keynote speaker will be Captain Mike Kenney, CEC, USN whom is the Public Works Officer Naval Station Norfolk, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic, Public Works Department Norfolk. AT3 Eric Ratliff will give a graduate testimony. The instructor is Robert Vilches.

The seventh welding class at Fort Hood began on 14 June 2016. The instructors are Micah Tyler and Louis Purcella. The ceremony is being held at the Community Events Center on Fort Hood. Don Masten, Training Coordinator of local 529 will Emcee the event. Chaplain Colonel Charles (Chip) Fields, Garrison chaplain Resource Manager will deliver the invocation. The keynote speaker will be Colonel James Gallivan, Chief of Staff, Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division. VIP Graduate Staff Sergeant Joddy Knoell will be giving a graduate testimony.

The VIP Program offers high-quality skills training and jobs in the pipe trades to active duty military personnel preparing to leave the service. Participants in the program receive 18 weeks of accelerated skills training in either welding, HVACR or sprinklerfitting, and earn industry-recognized certifications and college credit as part of their training. Upon graduation, participants gain direct entry into UA apprenticeship programs, which are recognized in the industry as the best in the business.

The program is currently being offered at Camp Lejeune (NC), Camp Pendleton (CA), Joint Base Lewis-McChord (WA), Fort Carson (CO), Fort Hood (TX), Fort Campbell (KY), Fort Sill (OK), and Naval Station Norfolk (VA).
