Veterans in Piping (VIP): Eight Marines Graduate at Camp Lejeune

Today, eight active-duty Marines will graduate from the Veterans in Piping® (VIP) welding program at Camp Lejeune.

This is the 6th welding class to graduate from the program at this location. The class began on June 27, 2016. There will be an open house/completion ceremony where students and guests will tour the UA welding mobile training trailers, which will follow with the conferral of certificates. Instructors Dave Porter and Billy Platt, along with Local 421 training coordinator John Scadini, will give the graduates some parting words of encouragement.

The VIP Program offers high-quality skills training and jobs in the pipe trades to active duty military personnel preparing to leave the service. Participants in the program receive 18 weeks of accelerated skills training in either welding, HVACR or sprinklerfitting, and earn industry-recognized certifications and college credit as part of their training. Upon graduation, participants gain direct entry into UA apprenticeship programs, which are recognized in the industry as the best in the business.

Each graduate of the VIP Program goes on to continue their training as apprentices in UA Local Unions while working for signatory contractors. Special thanks to the VIP welding instructors for their commitment to helping these veterans start their journey towards lasting careers as members of the United Association.

The program is currently being offered at Camp Lejeune (NC), Camp Pendleton (CA), Joint Base Lewis-McChord (WA), Fort Carson (CO), Fort Hood (TX), Fort Campbell (KY), Fort Sill (OK), and Naval Station Norfolk (VA). To learn more about the VIP Program, visit
