STATEMENT FROM UNITED ASSOCIATION GENERAL PRESIDENT MARK MCMANUS ON THE NEBRASKA PSC’S APPROVAL OF THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE

ANNAPOLIS, MD – November 20, 2017 - - On behalf of the 345,000 members of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada (UA), I commend the Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) for their permit approval allowing for the construction of the Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline project. Though the approval shifts the pipeline from its original location, the PSC has opened the path for this important project to move forward.

The UA has long supported this project and TransCanada’s goal to bring a reliable source of fuel through the region; and provide oil from Alberta to Steele City, Nebraska, and ultimately to the refineries of the Gulf Coast region. In times when our reliance on Middle Eastern and Venezuelan fuel sources is uncertain, this project makes sense for America and offers a more safe and stable means of fuel delivery to these areas. As our nation’s infrastructure continues to deteriorate and pipelines age, we must take the steps necessary to ensure that we do all that we can so that the sources of our fuel are delivered safely to their destinations. The KXL will also result in job opportunities and boost the local economies. This is good business and great for the labor community.
