← Energy Sector / Natural Gas: Creating Jobs for our Skilled Workforce
The United States is one of the largest producers—and consumers—of natural gas. The development of our massive shale deposits now accounts for 40 percent of our natural gas output. Shale gas has the potential to significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil—each year hundreds of billions of dollars are sent overseas to purchase this oil—and natural gas itself is a low emitter of CO2 emissions. As with nuclear power, the development and processing of North America’s natural gas resources will create jobs for our skilled tradespeople. Some estimates report these jobs will number in the millions as unconventional resources are developed. The availability of this source of energy is already spurring an increase in manufacturing in the United States, leading to even more opportunities for construction and fabrication—which means more jobs for hardworking UA members.
